Pemmican is simply the most nutritious food. So if you're looking for the most energy you can get from a unit of food, you've come to the right place. It has been proven that a human being can survive healthy and well, for at least a year, on a diet of quality lean meat and fat. Other nutritional elements may be desireable but they are not necessary for a person to maintain good health and energy levels. There are many web sites documenting the work of the famous anthropologist and explorer, Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879 - 1962) who led this ground-breaking work. Canawa Pemmican is made in Canada, with Grade AAA Canadian Beef and Canadian pasture raised beef tallow. We currently offer pure pemmican made with 50% beef jerk and 50% beef tallow - that's it, no salt, berries, sugar, preservatives or other additives. It is sold in 350 gram packages which supply the necessary daily caloric intake and nourishment for an active individual (approximately 2450 calories). For orders of 5 packages or more we will prepare pemmican that is 67% beef jerk and 33% beef tallow (approx. 2240 calories per pkg.), upon request. We also offer two types of spiced pemmican; curry spiced and roast-beef spiced. Both are delicious and maintain the integrity of the pemmican because we do not add any water or oils which would degrade its longevity and nutritional value. Please indicate in the comments section of the PayPal payment process if you would like one of these options. Real pemmican is actually quite soft at room temperature - it's as soft as the tallow is at room temperature. When kept in the fridge or in a backpack in the winter, it can become very hard. Products that attempt to maintain a permanent chewy or bar-like consistency are necessarily adding other ingredients that may detract from the nutrition and longevity of the product. In the winter, pemmican is best kept in a breast coat pocket to stay cool but not freezing. In summer pemmican is best when kept in the fridge until you are about to take it with you, and then it should be kept out of direct sunlight. Pemmican is also delicious when heated in a pan over a fire or it can be added to a basic soup mix to provide flavour and nutrition. Traditionally pemmican was eaten "as-is" (cold, cool or warm) at whatever time of the year it was needed. |

Canawa Pemmican is made from high quality, fully desiccated, beef jerk and tallow. Our tallow is a beautiful golden colour because it comes from grass-fed cattle. |

| Tallow from cattle raised on a pasture is a safer choice than
feedlot beef, and it offers richer flavor and better nutrition.
Grass-fed beef has two
to four times more essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids than
feedlot beef.
It also contains vitamin E and selenium. |

"A wooden bowl was soon set before me filled with the nutritious preparation of dried meat called pemmican by the northern voyagers and wasna by the Dahcotah." -
PARKMAN, The Oregon
Trail,
Chap. xv, (1846)
"As the trip extended over six or eight weeks, it was necessary to be well provided with food. The fare was simple but substantial. Flour, strong tea and sugar were the staples, and the well known pemmican. Pemmican is now a thing of the past, but was the sheet anchor of the Red River voyageur"........read more |
